Career Awards Scheme: The Department of Biotechnology has instituted a career oriented scheme to identify and nurture outstanding young scientists with innovative ideas and desirous of pursuing research in frontier areas of biotechnology. The young scientists below the age of 35 years are considered for this award. The scientists without regular employment are also eligible for this award. The scheme is also applicable for the researchers of Marine scientists. The details are available at :





Training Abroad:


Department of Biotechnology promote capacity building in cutting edge areas of biotechnology and life sciences including marine and aquatic sciences. The Award support scientists/ researchers of highest merit in their pursuit of skill enhancement in scientific research/training in overseas laboratories for conducting research in the best laboratories around the world on various aspects of marine biotechnology research. DBT Junior Research Fellowship (DBT- JRF) programme has been started from the year 2004. 250 JRFs are selected through Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET) conducted by University of Pune, Pune and fellowships are provided for an initial period of 3 years which could be extended upto five years with contingency grant support. Another scheme on Postdoctoral Fellowship (DBT- PDF) programme is providing 100 PDF per year in 2001. Fellowship of Rs. 11,000 per month in the first year and Rs. 11,500 per month from 2nd year and contingency grant of Rs. 50,000 per PDF per annum is provided. This fellowship can be extended upto 5 years on merit / progress on NIH pattern. Selection of PDFs is done by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Educational Courses:


Post Graduate Degree courses are available in marine biotechnology at various institutes both M.Sc. and M. Tech. Marine Biotechnology. The eligibility criteria is Bachelor's degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological Agricultural, Veterinary and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering/Technology, 4-years B.Sc.(Physician Assistant Course); OR Medicine (MBBS) OR B.D.S., with at least 55% marks. The admissions are made on the basis of "National Combined Entrance Examination in Biotechnology conducted by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) at various centres. Industry Support Programme:


The Department of Biotechnology supports proposals from Indian Companies under the SBIRI Scheme for support of early stage, proof-of-concept research & development of research leads towards commercialization in all fields of biotechnology. Under the scheme proposals are regularly invited for consideration of funding support. Another scheme on Biotechnology Industry Partnership Programme (BIPP) - An Advanced Technology Scheme (ATS), envisaged as a government partnership programme with industries for support on cost sharing basis for high risk discovery and innovation, accelerated technology development specially for futuristic areas to promote biotech industry R&D and public private partnership programmes. The scheme provides for a government contribution of 30-50% to the industry for discovery linked innovation. Grant in aid support would also be provided for evaluation and validation of biotechnology products that are based on indigenous discovery and innovation. Industrial Training in Marine Biotechnology:


To reduce the mismatch between requirement of industry and students produced by university, the Department of Biotechnology is facilitating industrial training for six months to postgraduate students in leading biotech industries. The Department is providing stipend to all the selected students and to attract more industries to offer this training, training fee of Rs. 50,000/- per student has been introduced from 2007-08. The scheme is also applicable to researcher scholars in the marine sector. Details may be referred at :
